Fo-Ti

This creeping vine was first identified as a medicinal herb in 713 A.D. Perhaps because it belonged to the realm of Taoist immortality, Fo-Ti (Polygonum multiflorum) recipes have escaped many of the commonly known herbal formulas that have appeared in the Materia Medica. However, in modern times it has been widely adopted as a medicine and is the premier longevity herb of Chinese Herbal Tonics

Some of Fo-Ti’s many uses include:
  • Significantly increase superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, a powerful natural antioxidant and free radical scavenger that has been demonstrated to have powerful anti-aging benefits in humans.
  • Promote the growth and strength of red blood cells.
  • Induce the production in humans of g-interferon (a unique protein with antiviral, immunoregulatory and anti-tumor properties)
  • Have an excellent laxative and cleansing effect. (unprepared roots)

Today it is used as a kidney and liver tonic, and for its ability to tonify and strengthen the blood, muscles, bones and tendons. Fo-Ti has enjoyed a long history as a prevention against premature aging, apparently having the ability to recreate youthfulness and change gray hair back to its original colour; in Asia, a popular reason for its consumption. Fo-ti is capable of increasing the fertility of men by increasing the sperm count and bolstering the libido. In women, it makes the ova more vital and increases blood. Therefore this herb is popular among couples attempting to conceive children.

Fo-Ti can strengthen the whole body. It is often used by athletes to fortify the knees, lower back, ligaments and muscles, providing strength and resilience.

Fo-ti is utilized in two ways: prepared and unprepared. Fo-ti is prepared by cooking it in a soup of black bean juice. This cooking method changes the herb’s qualities making it useful as a strengthening tonic. Used unprepared, Fo-ti is used for constipation, acne and as a cleanser.

It is wildcrafted, red FoTi and is offered in 3 formats:
  1. raw, dried slices
  2. sliced and prepared in organic black turtle bean juice
  3. prepared in organic black turtle bean juice and then finely powdered.
The raw, unprepared form is ready to be made into a gargle or drunk as a tea (laxative) or can be further processed in black bean juice. The latter two forms are ready to be decocted into a tonic. The prepared slices and powder can be eaten on their own or with other herbs and foods.

Reports of complications with drugs, foods or other supplements are rare. Fo-Ti is one of few herbs that can be taken by itself, but is often combined with other herbs for treating different illnesses.
